A Conversation with Siri on Making AI Safe for Humans
Abstract
This paper investigates the power disparities that exist in human-machine interactions between people and voice social agents such as Siri. The user-agent interaction style, the agent's answers to the user, and the agent's voice features, including gender, all contribute to the ephemeral program's "face." The communicative design of Siri on Apple devices establishes the artificial intelligence application as a subordinate girl working for the user, but Siri's face also conceals its purpose as a programme in service to Apple. The research implications for agents, social bots, and other AI systems are highlighted.
