Reimagining commercial health insurance in India: Possible routes
Abstract
In this article, we examine the reforms that might be made to India's expanding commercial health insurance (CHI) industry to provide appropriate financial security and positive health results. We outline important challenges that must be resolved on both the demand- and supply-sides of the insurance market if CHI is to be more in line with universal health coverage (UHC). On the demand side, we identify a client whose demands call for a fundamentally different strategy than the one that commercial health insurance in India has so far followed. This consumer deviates greatly from the rational actor paradigm. We clearly outline the various steps taken to introduce a consumer to the insurance market as well as the circumstances under which that consumer is likely to buy insurance.
